Robert Schumann found Franz Schubert’s Symphony in C Major, D 944 (the Great) in Ferdinand Schubert’s (the composer’s brother) attic during a trip to Vienna in 1837. The work received its historic premiere under Felix Mendelssohn’s direction in Leipzig on 21 March 1839. The heavenly length of this symphony, as Schumann expressed it, its inner force and formal complexity are overwhelming. This recording is the first of a series dedicated to Franz Schubert’s complete orchestral works featuring the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken under the direction of Marcello Viotti.
