Collection: Instrumental A delightful programme, full of Nordic spirit and beautifully played by Mattia Zappa and Massimiliano Mainolfi. This expressive CD is not to be missed, filled with music that is like a very bright light, though never far from the night, a light rather like the sun of Nordic summers. |

Subcollection: Piano Is it even necessary to introduce Clara Haskil? Sublime pianist, perhaps too often reduced to the role of an interpreter of Mozart, she now discloses a new side of her art for Claves, a side that already has received much attention in recordings: her collaboration with conductor Ernest Ansermet and his orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande; two live recordings made by Radio Suisse Romande during the last years of her life. On the program: Schumann’s Concerto in A Minor, recorded at Victoria Hall in Geneva in 1956, and Beethoven’s Concerto No. 3, which is immortalized here in a recording from the Septembre Musical in Montreux in 1960, less than four months before the pianist’s tragic death in Brussels. These are moving testimonies of her art that provide witness to the immense subtlety of her playing, fragile and irresistibly incandescent. And for Claves Records, which was taken over by the Clara Haskil Foundation, it is the opportunity to pay homage to its new “patron saint”. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Quartet Following the overwhelming success of their first recording of Schumann’s quartets (Claves CD 50-2404), which was greeted by widespread and (nearly) unanimous praise, the Terpsycordes Quartet (winners of the prestigious international competition in Geneva in 2002) now sets off on a journey entitled Joseph Haydn and his Opus 33. The recording features three from the set of six quartets (including the second quartet, “The Joke”) that the composer wrote in Esterhaza at the beginning of the 1780’s, here on gut strings with classic bows. Moreover, the quartet performs on four magnificent instruments made by Jean-Baptiste and Nicolas-François Vuillaume and placed at their disposal by the Geneva Museum of Art and History, contributing to very warm and homogeneous sonorities. And there are whispers in the halls at Claves that the four young Swiss musicians are already preparing their bows for an encounter with Schubert’s two magnificent quartets, “Rosamunde” and “Death and the Maiden”...

Subcollection: Piano Gregorio Zanon : The compelling need to express
Since its founding toward the end of the 1960’s, Claves has always placed special importance on finding and promoting young, talented artists. Pianists, violinists, flutists… and now, something unusual? A young composer from the Canton of Vaud, not shaped by the rules of a particular school but by the magic of his own passions. Gregorio Zanon composes like he breathes: with his stomach, his heart and that sense of urgency that makes art come vibrantly to life. He doesn’t have a choice; the notes that he brings to paper amass with the sole desire to express… an emotion, a question, a doubt, a desire… Gregorio Zanon does not write music with the intention of earning a place in posterity, and it is for reason of the integrity of his music that Claves has chosen to feature his works on a CD, brought to life by our “in-house” artists the Terpsycordes Quartet (this is already the ensemble’s third recording for the Swiss classical label) and Mark Drobinksy, cello, Jocelyne Rudasigwa, double bass (with Boulouris 5) and pianist Xavier Dami. A recording to discover!

Subcollection: Piano It is said that no one was her equal with Mozart; he was her composer of choice. And she is the “God mother” of Claves Records. What more natural (especially after the immense success of the Schumann/Beethoven recording with Ansermet released in 2004, Claves CD 50-2408) than to explore the archives of Radio Suisse Romande where a number of treasures bearing her mark still lie dormant. We were fortunate to find these remarkable performances of Mozart’s 19th and 24th Piano Concertos, immortal recordings made in the 50’s with Victor Desarzens at the head of his Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. The voyage continues… |
