Gian Carlo Menotti passed away recently - in 2007 - and had been a force in musical life for over half a century. Born in Italy, he became a friend of Samuel Barber while studying, and it was largely this friendship which encouraged him to move to the USA. Though his home was in the USA, he always considered himself to be an Italian composer.
Menotti had great success with several operas, establishing himself as a leading opera composer of the post-war period. There is a natural, innate lyricism to his musical language; an unabashed deployment of attractive melodies, which allows him to communicate directly to a large audience who, in general, share his musical taste, loving the things he loved.
Menotti's instrumental and vocal concert music has not attracted as much attention as his stage works, but his cantatas, concertos, song-cycles and other works all share the same musical virtues and attractiveness, creating vivid and compelling musical images, and benefitting from his instinctive sense of drama.
RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet:
Winner of the 1988 London International String Quartet Competition and now in its twenty-third concert season, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet is one of Europe’s most successful quartets, internationally recognised for its beauty of sound, clarity of texture and integrity of interpretation within an unusually wide and varied range of repertoire. Appointed Resident Quartet to RTÉ in 1986 and with almost 700 performances in Ireland to date, the group has dedicated itself to bringing the wonders of the string-quartet repertoire to audiences throughout the country. At the same time they have built a thriving international career, with regular tours taking them throughout Europe and the USA.

“It is not that difficult to play the violin. It is a simple thing, once you reach a certain stage.” - Mintcho Mintchev often repeats these words of Professor Yfrah Neaman and goes on: “The difficult part is to be able to decide what you want. If you know what you really want, then you will find the way to accomplish it.” It looks as if he had always known what he wanted, because when we listen to him we are amazed at the ease and simplicity of his manner of playing. He started taking violin lessons at an early age and gave his first solo concert when he was nine. He studied at the “Lyubomir Pipkov” National Music School, the “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” National Academy of Music and then furthered his violin studies for two years in London. His teachers were the famous violinists and pedagogues Emil Kamilarov and Yfrah Neaman. Mintcho Mintchev is laureate of the most prestigious international competitions: “Carl Flesch” in London, “Wieniawski” in Poland and “Paganini” in Italy, and today he is a respected adjudicator at these compositions. His concert activity is connected with the greatest orchestras in the world: the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, etc., and among the conductors that he worked with are Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Alexander Gibson, John Eliot Gardiner, Leonard Slatkin. He has played in the most renowned halls worldwide and also at some untypical places - for example in the big cave of the National Historical Archeological Reserve Madara. His repertoire is impressive and also includes many works composed specially for him. He plays on a Stradivarius - Baron Wittgenstein, made by the great Italian master in 1716 and bought by the Bulgarian country in 1877 for Mintcho Mintchev. Apart from his concert activity, Mintcho Mintcho is also famous with his work as a violin teacher. Since 1990 he has been a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany, but he also leads master classes in many countries in Europe (in Bulgaria - in Sofia, at the international festivals “Varna Summer”, “March Music Days” in Russe, “Apolonia” in Sozopol, “Chamber Music Days” in his native town Gabrovo), in America, Asia and Australia. In spite of his busy concert, recording and teaching career, Mintcho Mintchev always finds time to support the activity of different foundations: he is president of the “Pancho Vladigerov” Foundation and president of the International Violin Adjudicators to the International Competition for Piano and Violin “Pancho Vladigerov”, artistic director of the International Summer Music Academy “Varna Summer”, member of the Managing Board of the International Foundation “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”. A worthy co-performer in this release is the pianist Marina Kapitanova. Her creative biography is also impressive. She is a preferred performing partner and has played with Dina Schneiderman, Emil Kamilarov, Mintcho Mintchev, Eugenia-Maria Popova, Vesko Eschkenazy (Panteleev), etc. She has worked in the master classes of Mintcho Mintchev, Rosa Fein, Sashko Gavrilov, Oleg Krisa, Sergey Kravchenko, Takashi Shimizo, Devin Early, Michael Frischenschlager and has participated in concerts throughout Europe, in Japan, China, Korea…She has received awards and diplomas for best accompaniment at the competitions “Pancho Vladigerov”, “David Oystrach”, “Beijing 1986”, Belgrade, etc. Since 2005 Marina Kapitanova has been associate professor in piano accompaniment at the “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” National Academy of Music. |

GEGA NEW Music House has begun working in collaboration with the Swiss music organisation MUSIKÈ, founded on the initiative of Jean-Bernard Pommier and a group of musicians.
The first release of this series is a recording of Maurice Bourgue (oboe) and Jean-Bernard Pommier (piano).
Maurice Bourgue is one of today's leading oboists. He has won major international prizes and performs with the world's most prestigious orchestras and distinguished conductors: Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, etc. He also regularly conducts orchestras. As a soloist and chamber performer he has recorded for EMI, Decca, Nimbus, and many other well-known recording companies. In addition to his career as a musician, Mr. Bourgue is also a highly respected teacher. He holds permanent teaching positions in Paris and Geneva, and gives master classes in Budapest, Hanover, Moscow…
Jean-Bernard Pommier is renowned the world over as a pianist and conductor. He studied the piano under famous pedagogues and later joined E. Bigot's and E. Istomin's conducting classes. He is the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He has played with the greatest orchestras and conductors and worked in collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Herbert von Karajan. An outstanding chamber player, he regularly performs with Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, Christian Ferras, the Guarneri and Vermeer Quartets, and many other famous musicians. Alongside his career as a pianist, Mr. Pommier is an increasingly busy conductor, and is invited by the most prestigious orchestras in Europe and the USA. He has recorded for Erato, Virgin, EMI... He has notably recorded the complete Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas, the Bach Toccatas and Inventions, Chopin's Waltzes, etc.

“As with so much in Brahms' life, the genesis of his Piano Quintet, op.34, was fraught with indecision and introspection...” Brahms first wrote this work scored for string quintet, and after taking to heart criticism from Joachim, he not only re-scored the work for two pianos, but destroyed the original string quintet manuscript. Published in 1874, this new du version was not without problems, and it was Clara Schumann who pointed these out, causing Brahms to set about re-arranging the music once more, this time for piano quintet.
This was no simple re-scoring, for the piano quintet medium has unique demands, but, at last, “Brahms had found the medium through which his material could speak most eloquently.” It is the quintet in this final guise that we know it best, and that the Schubert Ensemble deliver here on this recording in an assured and expressive performance, allowing the sophisticated detail of Brahms' writing to throw us into the depths of emotion he conjures up. |
