Kontômè (spirits) - Gabin Dabiré

Kontômè (spirits) - Gabin Dabiré
ID: ARNR1996
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subkolektion: Songs

Kontômè (spirits) is an inspiring collection of some of Gabin Dabirés most alluring poetry, which, in accordance with his West African tradition, is integrated within a musical setting.
The engaging songs and charismatic vocals in this recording feature several new gems to delight the heart.

A beautiful song album of a great living African musician. Simple, profound and direct.
The Kontômè are idols that every household keeps in the same room as the altar. These icons represent the ancestral spirits, the guiding light of the family and society as a whole. These idols belong to the religious traditions of the Dagara tribe, an ethnic group native to Burkina Faso.

The Kontômè light our path throughout the course of our lives. We pray to them, we ask their advice and we thank them for what we are and what we have, now and in the future. In return, they help us as our destiny unfolds.

Therefore, through this small musical work, I thank my Kontômè and everyone else who, with infinite patience and determination, cooperated in the realization of this project.

- Gabin Dabiré

THE ARTIST Born in Burkina Faso in West Africa, Gabin Dabiré started his musical activity during his college years when he began playing the drums. The Song of Songs stands apart from its biblical surroundings as one of the supreme love poems of world literature, a celebration of erotic love in the form of a dialogue between a bridegroom and his bride, invoking all the senses, the fragrance of wine, blossom, fruits and spices. Ranging widely over five centuries, from the relative asperity of Dunstaple to the lush exoticism of Daniel-Lesur, this cherry-picked assortment of sweetmeats is given exultant life by Mike Brewer and Laudibus.

A'e Gowden Lyric - Songs by Ronald Stevenson

A'e Gowden Lyric - Songs by Ronald Stevenson
ID: DCD34006
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subkolektion: Songs

Susan Hamilton first performed the music of Ronald Stevenson as a treble in 1985, when she gave the first broadcast performance of A Child’s Garden of Verses on BBC Radio 3.

Her unique, clarion voice inspired Stevenson to dedicate his May Songs for soprano and orchestra to her three years later. Since that early collaboration, she has brought Stevenson’s songs to audiences throughout Britain and abroad. Stevenson’s keen ear for setting Scots poetry in an original idiom is rooted in his panglobal approach to musical philosophy. He is as comfortable setting the words of Robert Louis Stevenson as he is the poetry of Tagore.

The present recording features the soprano version of A Child’s Garden of Verses alongside settings of Scots poems by Hugh MacDiarmid and William Soutar and a short translated verse by the Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean.

Scotland’s troubadours Fires of Love follow King James VI on a varied journey through song and instrumental music. In the sixteenth century Scotland appeared outwardly to be musically bruised - not necessarily so … As our musicians deftly weave their way through Scotland’s rich tapestry of historic manuscripts, they unveil attractive unsophisticated melodies, often heavily imbued with the French style.

On their arrival in London, James and his musicians would have been taken aback by the highly active theatre scene. Shakespeare’s texts give rise to compelling settings, from the plaintive And will he not come again, poignantly rendered here by Frances Cooper, to the risqué joviality of St Valentine’s Day.

As the Scots courtier-musicians nimbly traded French influence for London’s ‘Englished’ Italian style, one wonders: did they regretfully look homewards - Remember me my deir?

Based in Scotland, Fires of Love has been performing in venues and festivals around Britain since 1998. The repertoire centres on lute and guitar songs, set amongst instrumental ensembles, solos, recent discoveries and the group’s own arrangements. The music spans the breadth of Europe and Instruments include lutes, archlute, theorbo, vihuela, baroque guitar, fourcourse guitar, recorders and percussion. The group has made two previous recordings for Delphian: Love and Reconquest: Music of Renaissance Spain (DCD34003) and Chansons à Plaisir: Music from the time of Adrian Le Roy (1520-1598) (DCD34063), both released to high critical acclaim.
