Royal Scottish National Orchestra & RSNO Junior Chorus, Christopher Bell
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s Christmas Concert, which takes place every December with performances in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen, is for many one of the highlights of the festive season.
This disc is a sample of the very best of these concerts, from well-loved family favourites - Twelve Days of Christmas, Jingle Bells - to the unique lesser-known works that make this event so consistently popular, such as Christmas Alphabet and The Penguin Song (which includes dance moves in the CD Booklet and above…)

The Majesty of thy Glory - The Temple Church Choir

The Majesty of thy Glory - The Temple Church Choir
ID: SIGCD225
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Choir

The Temple Church Choir is considered to be one or the finest choirs in London, a reputation it quckly gained after its founding in 1831. Their debut CD with Signum Classics displays a range of fine sacred works written by English composers between the 17th Century and the present day.

The Temple Church is one of the most historic and beautiful churches in London. Situated between Fleet Street and the Thames Embankment, its recorded musical history extends back to its restoration in 1841, although a church has stood on the site for over 800 years.

The modern choir is comprised of 18 boy choristers and 12 professional choirmen - an excellent opportunity for the choristers who receive singing and theory tuition as well as generous scholarships towards their education. The programme explores three fascinating and contrasting settings of the Te Deum: A stalwart of the church liturgy (first conceived as far back as AD 387), these settings span over 300 years of English music history, composed respectively in 1694 (Purcell), 1897 (Elgar) and 1944 (Howells).

This disc is complemented by the release of James Vivian’s English Organ Music from the Temple Church, also released this month.

An Irish Songbook - Ailish Tynan, soprano / Iain Burnside, piano

TIain Burnside and Ailish Tynan return to Signum with their second disc of Irish Songs and arrangements - this time from a range of different 20th Century composers.

Although all of the sung texts stem from Irelands rich heritage of literature (including poems from W.B. Yeats, Thomas Moore and James Joyce), the composers featured here have a more transatlantic feel, with works by John Cage and Samuel Barber programmed alongside others by Benjamin Britten and Herbert Hughes.

This disc continues Burnside’s series of recital discs with Signum - in particular his 2007 disc with Ailish Tynan of Irish songs by Herbert Hughes, A Purse of Gold (SIGCD106):

“The word 'arrangement' as Burnside suggests, doesn't do justice to the inventive piano writing and pacing of so many of these pieces ... Soprano Ailish Tynan's feeling for the musical idiom and, above all, the poetry of her countrymen, matched by Burnside's delightfully poetic pianism, prove irresistible. Highly recommended" - 5 Stars

Joining several discs from Signum celebrating 2013's Britten Centenary Year comes a new collection of the three Suites for Solo Cello, performed by star UK cellist Jamie Walton. Recorded in the Britten Studio at Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, the three suites were dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich, with the passionate third in particular inspired by Rostropovich’s rich and romantic performances of Bach’s unaccompanied suites.

Jamie Walton has established a reputation as a performer who deeply engages with the works he performs and records. Earlier this year he released a new recording of cello concertos by Schumann and Dvorak with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Following their acclaimed recordings of Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts and Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Paul McCreesh has once again assembled the mass forces of Gabrieli Consort & Players and Wrocaw Phiharmonic Choir to record one of the iconic masterpieces of the twentieth-century oratorio repertoire.

The work reflects Britten’s long-held and committed pacifist beliefs. Composed to mark the consecration of a new Cathedral in Coventry, Britten combines the Latin text of the Missa pro Defunctis with nine poems by the First World War poet Wilfred Owen, which vide a moving (and frequently uncomfortable) commentary on the liturgical text.

Britten’s powerful and masterful evocation of the North Sea in all its moods has to audiences all over the world become inextricably linked with the Aldeburgh that was home to George Crabbe (author of the ‘The Borough’ from which the story originates) in the eighteenth century and Britten in the twentieth.
Steuart Bedford leads a vast and accomplished ensemble on this new live recording, created shortly before the group’s unique staging of the work on the beach at Aldeburgh as part of the town’s world-renowned festival.

CHORAL MUSIC BY WILLIAM BYRD (1540-1623)
The Choir of Jesus College, Cambridge
Mark Williams Director

Led by Mark Williams, the Choir of Jesus College, Cambridge continue their critically-praised series of recordings on Signum with this new recording of works by British composers Britten and Byrd.

William Byrd and Benjamin Britten, their respective careers separated by about three hundred and fifty years, share one very significant characteristic. They were both, in quite different ways, outsiders.

As a devout Catholic existing within an alien environment - a state which ultimately viewed Catholicism as the equivalent of sedition - Byrd was obliged to pursue a kind of double life, expressing his spiritual exile in music of emotional intensity. Like Byrd, Britten became highly regarded by the establishment for his artistic achievements, but reservations regarding his homosexuality prevented his complete acceptance. Both his pacifism and his sexual orientation made him an outsider.
