The Birckholtz Trumpet from 1650

The Birckholtz Trumpet from 1650
ID: RK2805
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Baroque
Subcollection: Choral

The members of this trumpet ensemble play on copies of the trumpet by Wolff Birckholtz (Nuremberg, 1650) discovered in a church in Belitz. Jean-Francois Madeuf and his ensemble have researched which pieces could have been performed in Northern Germany on these instruments.

Antonio Vivaldi. Five Concertos for bassoon and chamber orchestra

Antonio Vivaldi. Five Concertos for bassoon and chamber orchestra

Vivaldi's artistic world was very much created under the impressions of majestic beauty of palaces and temples of Venice, of the rich colours of the canvases of the Venician painters,of colourful and bright carnivals, and of course of the rich musical traditions of his native town. Hence the architectonic perfection and the beauty of the proportions, the ebullient pulsation of the rhythm (his famous dotted "Lombardian" rhythm!) and the element of the dancing movement, the fascination of the song melos and the colourist interpretation of the orchestra. A musician who plays Vivaldi's Bassoon Concertos meets most difficult challenges. One has to convey with perfect expressiveness the melodious plasticity of the Italian bel canto; to show a virtuoso technique; to make a delicate gradation in correlation of solo and tutti; to be able to show the subtlety and elegance of the chamber music and at the same time the orchestral range of expression. This is how one can reach an effect of the polychromatic sound space of Vivaldi's music. Vivaldi's great intuition helped him to introduce a wonderful combination of the timbre of bassoon and string instruments (and also harpsichord which played the part of basso contino). This godsend proved to be very prospective for further developing of the concert repertoire for this instrument as string orchestra is present in many compositions for the bassoon. Natalia Gavrilova Doctor of Musicology, Professor of the Moscow Conservatoire

The Golden Duet:
Elena Sorokina, piano
Alexander Bakhchiev, piano

Clavier duet music of Johann Sebastian Bach, his descendants and students recreates the "live history" of the transition era: a complicated evolution of baroque into classicism and romanticism, change of the dominating ways of musical thinking - from the so-called "polyphonic" to "homophonic", changes in the system of musical images, genres, and means of expression.

Elena Sorokina and Alexander Bakhchiev are often called Russia' Golden Duet. They have been active on concert stage for 35 years. Their vast repertoire includes most of the works ever written for piano four hands and for two pianos. To mark 200-years anniversary of Franz Schubert they performed in Moscow and other cities all his compositions for piano four hands.
A.Bakhchiev and E.Sorokina were graduated from Moscow Conservatoire, and now both of them are Moscow Conservatoire professors.
Elena Sorokina is Doctor of musical science, Deputy Rector and Head of the Chair of history of theRussian music at the Moscow Conservatoire. Alexander Bakhchiev has been playing solo and in ensembles for over 40 years. He made over 60 recordings of music from baroque to modern composers. Sofia Gubaidullina dedicated her Concerto Introitus and Efim Podgaitz his Bakhchiev-concerto to him.
The duet recorded over 40 gramophone records and compact discs including Mozart's Complete Piano Duets, Music of Old Vienna, Piano duets by Rachmaninov, and many more.
In 1990 they were elected Presidents of the National Association of the Piano Duets.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of baroque music performed by the Moscow Chamber Orchestra lead by Rudolf Barshai.

The name of this musician emerged in the Soviet concert life in the early 1990’s. He quickly became successful as a solo violist and ensemble player. However, his thirst for something new and his strive for breaking stereotypes, which were the way of many cultural figures of the Thaw period led him to creating the first ever Soviet chamber orchestra. An exceptionally talented conductor and organizer, Rudolf Barshai won many well-known musicians over to joint playing, including those who had promising solo careers (violinist and conductor Lev Markiz, cellist Alla Vassilieva, harpsichordist and pianist Mikhail Muntian, oboist Evgeny Nepalo, bassoonist Vladimir Bogorad and others). The performances of the new orchestra surprised and admired the listeners. Its repertoire included compositions, which were previously little known to the domestic listeners, and on the contrary some well know, even “outworn” music, which sounded in a totally new way.

The compositions featured on this album are instrumental concertos by Tomaso Albinoni and Antonio Vivaldi, the concerto grosso by George Friedrich Handel and a suite by “Bach’s fortunate rival” Georg Philipp Telemann became a discovery to the Soviet audience of the years. Even today, when we have so many alternative versions to choose from and when “authenticity” is in fashion, these recordings from fifty years ago have not lost their originality. We still feel that peculiar freshness, audacity of the pioneers who discovered a new and at the same time so contemporary world of baroque music for themselves and their listeners.

Concerto Op. 7 No. 3 for oboe & strings in B flat major
Eugene Nepalo (oboe)
