Isabel's music doesn't evade making the process of its genesis audible, if not the doubts and hesitations during composition, then the traces of ways of deciding, which in their complexity form the special identity of her world of sound. We are not dealing with constructed music, triumphant algorithms conjuring up at any cost the plummet of incontestable certainties. On the contrary this is about the constant invention of certitudes to which the music lends its ear in coming into being, which accepts that a brief-sounding space of time can convey a vaster space of time and its decisions, and bring forth just that unique music adapted to the context of history - our history.

The title of the work 1+1=1 is a quotation from Andrey Tarkowsky’s film “Nostalgia” which points to the special relation between the two instruments.

We have been planing this unique project for a long time: a composition for two bass clarinets as a full evening program. Through intense research Pierluigi Billone has acquired much experience in handling the bass clarinet and is the ideal composer for this task. Billone has an open mind and original thoughts about such a project. His formal conception can open new spaces for the listeners and take them on a exciting journey into the souls of the bass clarinets. The title of the work 1+1=1 is a quotation from an Andrey Tarkovskij film which points to the special relation between the two instruments.

The foundation of the work is a constant layer of multi-channel electronics, which Mitterer has put together from his collection, snippets of older works, like KA and the Pavian, or networds 1-5, or from solo recordings from collaborative projects with Wolfgang Reisinger, Reinhardt Winkler, the Callboys and others. One thing unites them all: they all were created as free improvisations, not on the computer, not generated, not notated, intact results of the direct union of person and instrument. “... and every voice reaches listening ears”: When one blocks out the context of this formulation in Ovid’s brilliant description of the house of Fama, at the beginning of Book XII of his Metamorphoses, one can imagine without difficulty a person, who would find this so obvious an experience, that at first it hardly seems worth mentioning. But everyone, who understands the world by hearing the voices that reach their ‘listening ears’ gains thereby a similar experience, which for the most part we tend to block out, whether in the noisy urban environment or mainly in ostensibly quieter rural surroundings. With every perception, we select, order, classify or, during a visit to a classical concert, aurally ‘correct’ mistunings and overhear those fine overtones, out of which a fascinating cosmos of new sounds has developed in the past decade. Yet if one reads the Ovid rather more carefully, a strange and unique feature of the place described comes into view: it does not distinguish where a sound comes from, does not ask what it is, accepts everything that comes to it, and allows it to reverberate within, transformed into a gentle resonance. What Fama, the goddess of Rumour, then does with this wealth of information lies on a different page of course, and we will yet have to return to it. The open ear registers what comes to it without prejudice, and each listener should not just consciously activate it now and then with music. And Ovid’s image contains something else: the description of Fama’s house as a space filled with sound acts as an express reminder that, for one thing, without a space, sound would be unthinkable. For another, it records both the distance between what is making the sound and the place of its perception as well as the bridging of this distance through the expanse of space. In addition, that account evokes something which fundamentally distinguishes the auditory from other senses of perception: in opposition to the visible, sounds moving in space can freely develop, overcome obstacles without effort and intermingle with one another, without losing their own unique characteristics. In was Ovid’s incredible conception of a place to which all the events and sounds of the world come and find resonance that always fascinated Beat Furrer. (Daniel Ender)

I - that sacred time:
Cut to pieces by the media, drowned in over-information, measured in this age of zapping and clips, this time, the time which Bataille called ‘sacred’, the time of Art, Love and Creativeness, the instant when something unprecedented happens, can only be preserved by the artist if he completely resists this late 20th century environment. Paradoxically, however, these are precisely the rhythms which feed and inspire him. This is the only world which calls forth his questions. And so, the response to this discontinued flood of information will be a music finding its unity and continuity. Its wintry slowness will be the reversed echo of a stress-ridden world rushing towards its end.
II - Zwitschermaschine:
Think of whales, men and birds. When you hear the songs of the whales, they are so spaced out that what sounds like a gigantic, drawn-out and endless moan is perhaps only one consonant to them. This means that it is impossible to perceive their speech with our constant of time. Similarly, when we hear a bird sing, our impression is that it sounds very high-pitched and agitated. for its constant of time is much shorter than ours. It is difficult for us to perceive its subtle variations of timbre, while it may perceive us, perhaps, as we perceive the whales. (Gérard Grisey)

Olga Neuwirth’s music is full of shifts, ruptures, deformations and associative relationships. Her works build upon a various materials of sound, image and language taken from highly diverse backgrounds, which she interconnects without evening out their intrinsic characteristics. Usually marked by unpredictable transformations during which the music branches out like lush organic growth, the composition comes to reflect the heterogeneous starting materials.
These also include a special way of handling the musical instruments - the composer manipulates the tone colors, usually through untypical tuning and preparation, thus providing the groundwork for the creation of highly differentiated musical situations. This roughening of sounds cannot be taken as a mere rejection of conventional euphony. Rather, it articulates a need to capture the potential that lies dormant in these sound producers and harness it for the process of composition thus creating a means of expression based on these unusual ways of sound production in order to formulate contemporary musical figures. Although the composer always traces her vocabulary back to the process of generation that begins with the acoustics and resonance of the instruments used, the process can be understood most clearly in her chamber music instrumentation, especially in the works composed for strings. As though he were an architect in sound - the architect of an ongoing Revolution of the Viaduct (Paul Klee) - this composer discovers in his piano pieces something which, for a master mason, might represent discarded corner-stones: the heart of the secret. It becomes apparent that in the pieces for solo piano - themselves like a collection of cornerstones in his output - a small collection of musical gems has come into being: crystalline, glittering, and utterly lucid both in form and appearance. The guiding and enlightening code for them might read: distillation by diminution. (Wolfgang Hofer)

With his disconcertingly hypnotic, excitingly oscillating music, the American Morton Feldman has become a cult figure in recent years. Now, recordings of hitherto unpublished compositions for film are available for the first time on a cd. When we imagine Feldman, we think of pure, crystalline music. But we do not think of wide, soft sounds, that do describe paintings through their power, like you would expect in Hollywood productions. We do not know him like that. On this cd we have two pieces that give notice of the narrow liason with painting, (Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock). Being in the present with the sound, this time music with stories and history: this is how we experience this extraorbitant dramatic art by the fascinating recording by ensemble recherche.

Music to hear is characterised by the rhetoric of musical diction: an alternation of tension and relaxation, clearly defined metrics, main themes, the alternation of stressed and unstressed tempi, a comprehensibility of figures, and generally the use of figures at all... (Frank Gerhardt)
