Sabine Lutzenberger mezzosoprano
Klangforum Wien / Sylvain Cambreling conductor

The Stars of Hunger, was composed in 2007. It is based on three poems by the Austrian poet Christine Lavant: “Im rueckgrat aufwaerts glimmt ein licht,” “So also geht erleuchtung vor,” “Zeig an mir die kräuter welche bestärken” and “Lösch aus mein gesicht und führe mich blind.” Rather than set the poems themselves to music, Lang used the text generation program Abulafia to produce from them a cut-up in the tradition of William S. Burroughs. The composition contains only fragments of the poems, but both the invocational gestures and the characteristic language of these lyrical works -“Ginsterlicht,” “Schlüsselblick,” “mondversippt,” “der Schlaf steht duftend und gesalbt”- remain recognizable. Lang augments the four movements devoted to the Lavant poems by an instrumental introduction and two variations on Guillaume de Machaut’s rondo Ma fin est mon commencement. The identification of beginning and an end, as indicated in the text’s title line, shows that repetition was an issue even as long ago as Machaut’s day. But while this line is enough to conjure up an era during which the belief in life after death was still unquestioned (Machaut died in 1377), Lavant’s poems articulate this belief solely via their rebellion against the suffering of living creatures.

Monadologie VII shows us a familiar and yet strange landscape, a musical topography bereft of a dramaturgy; again and again, the musical events grind to a halt, get stuck. In these brief moments of empty repetition, it is as if one could abandon every plan and every objective without the slightest loss. It is such moments that give rise to dimensions within which the difference between present and past transforms itself into a musical experience. (Sabine Sanio)

In his String Quartets Rueda exhibits, his special capacity for inextricably bringing together an array of compositional techniques and results, structure and instinctive feeling, a latent capacity for development and communication. Due to the style in which he combines and joins his sonic material, Posadas’ compatriots often refer to his music as “Francophile”. Beyond the Pyrenees and above all in Francophone countries, where many doors of opportunity were opened to him (including by Festival d’Automne in Paris, Agora Festival (IRCAM), Strasbourg’s MUSICA and Brussels’ Ars Musica), the opposite is true: there, he is viewed as a genuinely Spanish composer due to the power and aplomb that emanate from even his more transparent masses of sound.

Like Xi and Fantaisie mécanique, the Double Concerto for prepared piano, percussion and ensemble (2002) was written for the Paris-based Ensemble intercontemporain. Its central compositional idea is that of combining its two antagonists - soloists and ensemble - to create a single homogeneous body of sound. While the soloists provide the impulse for the motivic cells, the ensemble takes up these cells and develops them further. Here too Unsuk Chin uses the idea of metamorphosis to realize a coherent musical texture that is nonetheless constantly growing The sonorities and the complex rhythmic layering of the piece are to some extent influenced by Balinese gamelan music. “I’ve tried to write music that’s highly coloured in character and expression, freely flowing and flexible, and which sometimes develops in entirely unexpected directions.”

This is a piece about reality and fiction, about the strength of the imagination and the power of the past, and about love...
Mexican author Carlos Fuentes wrote his short story Aura in Paris in 1961. It belongs to the traditions of magic realism and Latin American ghost stories, even if it actually goes far beyond these. In an essay which is almost as long as the actual story, Fuentes not only explained the autobiographical impetus for the tale, but also described the culture-historical and motivic framework within which this story lives. It ranges from ancient Chinese literature to a Japanese story from the 17th century and on to Luis Buñuel’s Exterminating Angel, Alexandre Dumas’ Lady of the Camellias and Verdi’s La Traviata. For Fuentes, Aura is above all a story of eroticism and necrophilia, taking up the time-honoured tradition of stories about eternal fidelity and couples who are reunited in death. (Rainer Pöllmann)

José Manuel López López, a composer with many long years of experience, stands out by virtue of his mature style of writing and the consistent way in which he adapts what he writes to the sound which he intends to produce. Since composing his initial musical works during the 1980s, his development has led from atonality to spectralism and, from there, on to experimentation with various temporal granulations. This CD brings together three symphonic works with solo instruments that exemplify this development. Written in the period between 1995 and 2005, they represent three distinctly different contributions to the contemporary orchestral repertoire.

RAMON LAZKANO - Hauskor

Hauskor
In Basque the word Hauskor refers to that which potentially has the quality of breaking itself up into dust thanks to the inner dynamism of the material after which it is named. Thus comes the initial idea of the piece: eight cellists who, because of their new position in space, dim and blur the orchestral convention, trickling what seemed to be a homogeneous group into separate voices which end up confronting the wholeness from which they spring. It is the threshold of a conflict, and over this threshold leans and balances itself what could be alluded to as the production of sounds.

Ortzi Isilak
Ramon Lazkano took two quotations from Nietzsche as the thought and the expression of the sound environment from which the musical idea slowly emerges. These two references may be read philosophically and artistically but can also plainly allude to a certain figurative affinity with the contents of the work.

Ilunkor
The five linked up sections of Ilunkor seek after the mineral and earthly ideas which were at the onset of their being designed. Carving sounds, creating volumes and crests out of silence, saturating harmony and carrying dynamics and ranges to extremes, conceiving shape as a maze of breakings and windows and time as an expanded dimension…

The pieces of this cd are new compositions of Manuel Hidalgo and arrangements of works by Ludwig van Beethoven. Hidalgo was born in Atequera in 1956 and was a student of Helmut Lachenmann.
A glance at his catalogue of works reveals Hidalgo’s intense interest in the “Beethoven the giant,” whose music-alongside that of Mozart-has accompanied him since childhood. His Beethoven arrangements range from the Scherzo of the Symphony No. 9 op. 125 to the Heiliger Dankgesang op. 132 for voices, and from the Introduction and Fugue of the Hammerklavier Sonata op. 106 for accordion and orchestra to the variation movement from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 109. The latest addition to this group of works is the Bagatelles. (Patrick Hahn)

Gösta’s disinterest in homogenous, unified forms results in swift transitions between sonic states. Non-repetition. “I define sound in terms of structure, not in terms of expressivity.” In this, the sound-and thus probably also its sensuosity, in a gradual, carefully way-is compositionally lent weight in L‘oubli... “via the use of the harp and the keyboard instruments accordion and piano, as well as by exploiting string colours.” Such apparitions of colour change rapidly, fluctuate.

This CD combines pieces for three instruments, trios - and yet it is very remote from the contemplatively muted frame-work of traditional chamber music. The small group of musicians does not establish intimacy, but causes the gaps, warpings, abysses in Rihm's music to widen even further instead. When the three instrumentalists position themselves as far away from each other in the calm scene "am horizont" (on the horizon), this is only an external sign for the extreme tension that prevails: delicacy of sound and wild noise, falling silent and eloquence, conglomeration and decomposition - accompanied by covert (auto)biographical allusions to Ingeborg Bachman or Karlheinz Stockhausen, Rudi Stephan or Maurizio Kagel.
