Subkolektion: New Music

When Johannes Maria Staud refers in a commentary to one of his works to the pre-Socratic philosopher Anaximander and the latter’s contrasting pair of concepts apeiron (unlimited or infinite) and peras (limited or finite), he outlines a fundamental problem: the conflict between associative invention and logical development. The two compositions of the same name, however, are less suited to separate the two aspects of this relationship than to explore the various priorities between them. (Daniel Ender)

Born in 1974, Austrian composer Johannes Maria Staud has established a solid international career, including a substantial presence in the U.S., as featured guest composer at Tanglewood, and with a three-year residency with the Cleveland Orchestra. Apeiron, the highlighted work on this disc, is scored for a massive orchestra of 101 players, and while it has moments of gossamer delicacy, when Staud pulls out all the stops, he makes good use of all 101 players to create music of cataclysmic power. The title is taken from a cosmological theory developed by Greek philosopher Anaximander to describe the primal chaos that embraced and incorporated all things, and from which all things developed, and it's an apt metaphor for the sound of the music itself. Staud has said that the development of his pieces is organic rather than architectural, and Apeiron has a spontaneity and unpredictability that's more viscerally gripping than analytically explicable. Apeiron is the most intriguing and engaging piece.

Light and air in a state of constant, subtly detailed movement: this is also the nature of Sciarrino‘s music, as if it had soaked up all those delicate colours and adopted the mobility of air, captured its nocturnal buzzing-sounds with a net veil and transformed them into fluctuating sonorities, roaring and murmuring. One could almost think that the flickering odours of Mediterranean landscapes had entered the fleeting images of such music. Vague suggestions emerging from an old cultural realm, transposed into the present, lingering briefly and then disappearing once more. An interplay of sound and silence, free-floating fragments no longer within the domain of the unambiguous: one listens to them spellbound. (Lothar Knessl)

Siddhartha: Inspired by the short story Siddhartha (1922) by Hermann Hesse, this work by Claude Vivier was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation hut could not, for various reasons, be premiered as scheduled in 1976 by the National Youth Orchestra of Canada under the direction of Marius Constant. The Canadian conductor and composer Walter Boudreau, who conducted the first performance in I986, has supplied the following commentary on the work. “Siddhartha probably represents the most revealing musical testament of Claude Vivier‘s thought and, from a formal point of view, it is also his most successfiil work. lt is direct, perfectly sculpted music that begins with a simple melody and broadens marvellously into a fantastic galaxy of ideas and emotions. “It is very sensitive music as well. The composer listens intently to his creative self and communicates his total being to us with disarming simplicity. “Finally, it is self-reflective music that feeds on its own substance in order to expand. Siddhartha is a living organism, a kind of cosmic child haunted by the idea of death and the infinite.“ (Jaco Mijnheer)

Olga Neuwirth 's faible for grotesque themes and her occasional vegetative proliferation of pieces ensured her a permanent place in the repertoire. As brilliant growths of an undomesticated artist.
Many-facetted, vigorously arranged scores with the most heterogeneous influences and styles, far remote from any of the false glamour characteristic of postmodernity. With the conductor Pierre Boulez she has found herself a genuine ally. (Wolfgang Fuhrmann)

... As only few other composers, Gérard Grisey was a master at working in these various "altidudes", one who skilfully zoomed back and forth between micro- and macro-time, or, in Grisey's beautiful imagery, between human time and the extended time of whales and the extremely compressed time of insects. and this disposal of time, of the hearing perspevtive - Grisey certainly knew it - affords the music a power that touches on the metaphysical just as the texts of "Quatre chants" do. "Fertilised with time, the music is afforded the power of the sacred of which Georges Bataille speaks; mute and silent forces that invoke and exorcise the sound and its emergence - perhaps and only for a moment. "Art, working with art and making art, is in itself an invitation to boundless freedom. There can be no submission here," writes Wolfgang Rihm. "Uncertainty predominates, the only potential for an agile mind." Four pieces of one of the most significant and provocative post-war composers whose titles speak for themselves: "Gejagte Form" or hunted form, "Verborgene Formen" or concealed forms, "Chiffre I" or cipher, and "Silence to be beaten (Chiffre II)". Four pieces of music that attempt to realise what Wolfgang Rihm considers "art's purpose": "Not to be a place of refuge but a reservoir of energy in regressive times."

Beat Furrer - Nuun

The Austrian composer of Swiss origin considers his art to be a "view over the moving matter 'sound'": Beat Furrer does not develop sounds, he observes them, his music does not unfold dynamically with time, but attempts to rescind it: "No beginning", writes Furrer, "everything is present from the start". "nuun" thus filters out the individual layers of an initially almost impenetrable sound, as when you suddenly discover structures in a monochrome painting upon taking a closer look. Furrer then compares the sound dramaturgy of "still" with an electrical circular saw which when set into operation almost inaudibly unfolds greatest power and energy - until it encounters resistance.

(text by Salvatore Sciarrino after Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi)

Attracted by the borderline experiences and solitary forms of a gradually darkening Renaissance, these compositions by Salvatore Sciarrino revolve around three figures from the 16th century, all of whom lost control in the field of tension between feverish living and spiritual demise, between brightness and damnation, inspired, driven and obsessed. The famous poet Torquato Tasso describes in three authentic letters (Lettere poetici) his tormenting visions of goblins and phantoms. This is all reflected in Sciarrino's intense, whispering, whirring music, in which silence is as significant as the birth of sound, "Almost naked, sober," remarks the composer, "and that is an important element when one is listening to music. Only in this way can it bore its way into the flesh."
