Michael Nyman - Six Celan Songs - The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi

Michael Nyman - Six Celan Songs - The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi
ID: MNRCD108
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Songs

The MN Records catalogue is significantly enriched with a second set of CDs to add to the 6 released in 2005. Two major albums are released on 24 July featuring Nyman's non-operatic vocal music:

Six Celan Songs/The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi and Acts of Beauty/Exit no Exit are new recordings that present compelling examples of Nyman's vibrant approach to word-setting, song structure and subject matter.

Six Celan Songs/The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi couples two of Michael Nyman's major vocal pieces of 1991 and 2001 and two favoured singers of the composer, Hilary Summers and Sarah Leonard.

Six Celan Songs is Michael Nyman's most profound song cycle, composed in 1990 for Ute Lemper.
Nyman selected six of Paul Celan's less hermetic texts, accidentally, perhaps, all featuring flower symbolism in a kind of 'negative theology', representing Celan's attempt as a poet to come to terms with the impossibility, according to Adorno, of writing poetry 'after Auschwitz'.
The songs, individually and collectively, express both the horror, the emptiness of the writer in exile and are cast in a musical language which attempts to 'reinvent' an imaginary emotional world related to the Romanian background in 1920s Bukovina, where Celan was born.

The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi, unlike the Six Celan Songs, deals directly with a war situation - an 18-month- old Kosovan boy left for dead during the Kosovo war, found and re-named by the Serbs and 6 months later reunited with his parents. It is the most recent in Nyman's series of collaborations with visual artists, in this case the American feminist/conceptualist Mary Kelly. Kelly provided the composer with a complex text in a simple ballad form which Nyman brilliantly subverts in his continuous 18-minute piece, written for Sarah Leonard and the Nyman Quartet and first performed surrounded by Kelly's visual representation of the text in the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2001.

Judy Garland - The London Studio Recordings 1957-1964

Judy Garland - The London Studio Recordings 1957-1964
ID: FHR12
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

From 1955 through 1964, Judy Garland was one of the most celebrated, acclaimed, and best-selling album artists on the EMI/Capitol roster. On several occasions during those years, she had the opportunity of recording at Abbey Road Studios. This 2CD set assembles her work done there between October 1957 and August 1964. Not only are 12 previously unreleased alternate takes included but, more significantly, a completely unknown/undocumented recording of a song called Please Say 'Ah'! The Mort Lindsey orchestration of this song is complicated and marvellous, the band on top form; Garland and her vocal partner, Saul Chaplin, are having a wonderful time and this great piece of fun, liberally sprinkled with Garland's infectious laugh, demands to be heard! This historic issue is the very first composite compact disc celebration of its kind and a guaranteed collector's item for anyone who appreciates the Great Popular Songbook - and "the World's greatest entertainer."

He is one of the major figures behind the art of French song in the 20thcentury.He recently passed away on 17 August 2004,and Claves is honored to pay homage to him by releasing two of his LP recordings from the end of the 1950’s on a CD:ancient Italian and Spanish songs as well as eight Lieder by Franz Liszt, accompanied on the piano by his partner of long standing Dalton Baldwin.Itis a moving testimony that pays homage to an artist who occasionally was the object of unmerited reproach by critics.

1 - 5 Zürcher Klaviertrio & Gun-Brit Barkmin, soprano
6 - 12 Gun-Brit Barkmin, soprano

Dmitri Shostakovich would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. And he most certainly would have been pleased by the superb homage offered by the Zurich Piano Trio in the form of this CD, a recording of rare power and inspiration featuring the two Piano Trios Opp. 8 & 67 and the 7 Romances for Soprano and Piano Trio to Poems by Alexander Blok. Vocalist Gun-Brit Barkmin is flawless and the recording by Almut Telsnigs (Bavarian Radio) is guaranteed to satisfy the most critical audiophile. This is the second recording by the Zurich Piano Trio for Claves (after a CD featuring works by Ives, Piazzola and Schnyder, Claves CD 50-2106), a must!

Luciano Catapano - The Golden Age of Neopolitan Song - II Duo della Sibilla

Luciano Catapano - The Golden Age of Neopolitan Song - II Duo della Sibilla
ID: CLAVES502618
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Voices

This is a truly enchanting recording, the beginning of a long voyage to the land of living music, something that is born through direct contact with audiences. Neopolitan tenor Luciano Catapano appeared under the ancient vaults of St. Nicolas in Rougemont at the foot of the Alps in Vaud during the early music festival La Folia in 2005. And he was immediately invited back to give the best of himself for a Claves recording the year following: a “Neapolitan night” with his colleague Gino Evangelista, who shares his love for this unique region and who has performed with him in duo for many years, Il Duo della Sibilla. Utter delight…

Luciano Catapano, tenor, guitar

Juan Crisostomo De Arriaga - Basque National Orchestra - Mandel: Vol. 10.

Juan Crisostomo De Arriaga - Basque National Orchestra - Mandel: Vol. 10.

CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

The incredible destiny of Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga! Although he lived only twenty years he left a musical legacy that earned him a position among the greatest composers of his time. A child prodigy from Bilbao, he left his native Basque country early in order to mix with the avant-garde in Paris, Berlioz in particular, as if he sensed that life would leave him little time for all that he wanted to create and express. As a student of Baillot and Fétis as well as of the “old” Méhul at the Paris Conservatory, he kept his ears open in all directions and let his pen follow. Young, curious, demanding, the music that he brought to paper bore the indelible mark of this sense of artistic “urgency”. One can only ask what would have flown from the veins of this “James Dean” of music if he had lived ten years longer… Affectionately named “the Spanish Mozart” by his contemporaries, he bequeathed us with an opera, a symphony, three string quartets (immortalized for Claves by the Sine Nomine Quartet - CD 50-9501), as well as (less well known) a whole series of vocal compositions that were written during the course of his work as assistant to Fétis at the conservatory (which may well have been the reason for his fragile health). The Basque National Orchestra once again offers a masterful performance on “virgin grounds” for many, the tenth recording already in our series featuring music by Basque composers - truly amiable meeting and sign of friendship between two “small” nations, proud of their culture and their identity in the midst of Europe. Arriaga would have celebrated his 200th birthday this year… if only!
