By Sciarrino’s own admission, this is the best and reference version of his well-known 2-act-opera Luci mie traditrici in a stunning performance by Ensemble Algoritmo conducted by Marco Angius.
Luci mie traditrici was presented on 19th May 1998 in the Schwetzinger Festpiele under the German title Die tödliche Blume (The Deadly Flower). The libretto by Sciarrino is based freely on "Il tradimento per l’onore", a prose tragedy published for the first time in 1659 under the name of G.A. Cicognini (Florence 1606-Venice 1649) and followed by various reprintings. The libretto centres on lovers’ basic conflicts but Luci reaches beyond the ordinary by showing how familiar impulses can spiral into the pathological and cause disaster. A timid person turns into a perfidious murderer when he loses the certainty of his relationship. Tender feelings mutate into obsession; boundless love becomes immeasurable suffering, and the dream of lovers’ paradise turns into a vision of eternal damnation. |

A strong voice, a bright dramatic gift, a passionate temperament, creative courage and a precise sense of a role - all these virtues are combined by the name of the unique opera singer Hibla Gerzmava, a People’s Artist of Russia and People’s Artist of the Republic of Abkhazia.
Hibla Gerzmava is an opera singer of a world scale, a remarkable actress and versatile musician. In 1994, she graduated from the Moscow Conservatory where she majored in solo singing under professors Irina Maslennikova and Evgenia Arefieva, and completed her post-graduate course under Maslennikova in 1996. Since 1995 Hibla has been a soloist of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre in Moscow, debuting as Musetta in Puccini’s La bohème.
Today, the Russian prima donna is a guest star of the state opera houses of Vienna, Paris, Rome and Bavaria, and of the Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
In 2001, Hibla Gerzmava was awarded the national theatre prize The Golden Mask and Casta Diva as the Best Singer for her Lucia in Donizetti’s 'Lucia di Lammermoor'. She is also an owner of the Moscow Prize in the field of literature and arts (2010) and Triumph Award (2011).
The distinguished violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov’s versatile talent has been vividly realized in many spheres of social life. In 1979, he co-founded the Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra with a group of musicians who shared his views and became its unchallenged artistic director, conductor and soloist. In 2003, Vladimir Spivakov became artistic director and principal conductor of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia he created, and the president of the Moscow International House of Music.
On the initiative of Vladimir Spivakov, Hibla Gerzmava performed in Svetlanov Hall of the Moscow International House of Music on 14 October 2013, accompanied by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia. 'Firma Melodiya' presents the program of the concert on this CD, which included both classic and less known Russian overtures, arias and scenes from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi.
Arsen Sogomonian, a soloist of the of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre, and prize laureate of the Moscow International Competition 'Romansiada', also took part at the concert.

70 years ago, from June to October, the German Luftwaffe tried to bomb Great Britain into submission. It never happened. British courage and resourcefulness triumphed. These events are celebrated in music and song on the latest release of The Carl Davis Collection. Here are the songs people sang, the film scores they loved and heard on the radio. A brilliant cast of soloists together with the BBC-CO and The Brighton Festival Chorus play and sing their hearts out just as people did in 1940.
This Album features: Claire Sweeney , Mary Carewe, Frances McCafferty, Richard Suart, Sarah Eyden, Brighton Festival Chorus and BBC Concert Orchestra all conducted by Carl Davis in a tremendous album of new orchestrations of the old favourites from World War II, never before performed in this format.
Released to coincide with the Anniversary of The Battle of Britain, this June, Carl Davis will be performing selections of the album at several concerts throughout June and July including Dunsfold Park, Surrey, June 5, Lichfield, July 9 and Liverpool, July 10.
The Carl Davis Collection will be taking adverts out in BBC Music Magazine and Classic FM and the album will be featured regularly on Radio 2. There will be a series of syndicated interviews with Carl and Claire Sweeney in the coming months on radio and interviews on television all centred on the release of Give Me A Smile |

Vaughan Williams completed The Garden of Proserpine in 1899 and the work was begun in 1897 or 1898. For the twenty-something composer, it was a first attempt at a large-scale work, 489 bars long (at 24 minutes) for soprano soloist, chorus and full orchestra. Given that Vaughan Williams had only produced a handful of songs and some chamber pieces by this date, it is an impressive achievement that, in the closing pages, achieves that combination of radiance and nobility that is so characteristic of this composer in his later works. This is a premier recording.
In the Fen Country was completed in 1904 and first performed in 1909 by Thomas Beecham, the melodic outlines and the spirit of folk music is prevalent in this work.
Hadley’s Fen and Flood was inspired by the devastating events of the night of January 31 1953 when a deadly hurricane force wind created a storm tide up to 18 feet above mean sea level. Overall 2,400 people both here and in The Netherlands lost their lives. Vaughan Williams persuaded his friend Hadley to allow him to arrange the work for SATB. The new arrangement was first performed in 1956 and was dedicated to Vaughan Williams. This is a world premier recording.
The recording was recorded at The Lighthouse Poole with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Paul Daniel with soloists Jane Irwin, Mary Bevan, Leigh Melrose and the Joyful Company of Singers under Peter Broadbent. |
