There are very few works for violin and guitar and part of them, unfortunately, have already been forgotten. That is why the musicians who are attracted by the interesting combination of the two stringed instruments, do not have another choice but to perform mostly transcriptions of works for violin and piano. This is the approach of the violinist Jochen Brusch and the guitarist Finn Svit.

The name of the programme comes from Bela Bartok's cycle of miniatures Out of Doors, performed by the young pianist Anna Stoytcheva (b. 1974). She began her piano studies in Bulgaria and after that received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Degrees from the Juilliard School. Her international career started in 1991 when she became winner of the Ettore Pozzolo International Piano Competition in Italy. Her recognition in the USA began with the Ravel Concerto Piano Competition. Since then she has been characterized as an artist of strong individuality, remarkable sensitivity and a sense for the development and trends of music. Her interpretation of Debussy's Images places her among the pianists who have left their own mark in interpreting the composer's impressionistic visions. Anna Stoytcheva is inspired by the originality of Bartok's miniatures and she transforms every piano piece into an emotionally depicted picture with its specific colour. She plays the works with her characteristic temperament and

The second CD of the pianist Vesselin Stanev presents him as an excellent interpreter of music by Chopin, Ravel and Rachmaninov. Vesselin Stanev has chosen works of the highest pianistic class and proves again his exceptional talent. He has been student of Dmitriy Bachkirov, a celebrated representatives of the Russian keyboard school, and later continued perfecting his skills with the well-known Alexis Weissenberg. Stanev is holder of several prestigious prizes in international competitions. He enjoys an active concert-giving career in France, where he has been living for years, in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Moscow and Bulgaria. Musical critics rank him with the greatest pianists of the 20th century and continuously emphasize on his power, insight and temperament of performance. The performer's originality of ideas, form-construction and exceptional musicality are the characteristics that create the strongest impression in his interpretations. In addition, he possesses a well-mastered and appropriately used virtuosity, organically linked with the whole concept about the composition he perfroms. The magnificence of Chopin's 24 Preludes and Rachmaninov's Sonata No. 2 prove all the pianist's gifts. On the other hand, the richness of nuances and images, revealed with impressionistic finesse and fantasy in Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit, show him as a great master of the sound and a pianist who is capable of suggesting emotions, ideas, psychological states and romantic elеgance, and who controls in details all the subtleties of his instrument.

JEAN-MARIE LECLAIR - Six sonatas for Two Violas, Op.12 - Dimitar Penkov & Johannes Flieder

JEAN-MARIE LECLAIR - Six sonatas for Two Violas, Op.12 - Dimitar Penkov & Johannes Flieder
ID: GD212
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Instrumental
Subcollection: Viola

The CD includes the sonatas for two violas by the French composer Jean-Marie Leclair. It reveals the wealth and the unique beauty of the viola art from the age of the French Classicism. As it happened often during this period, Leclair began his artistic career as a ballet-dancer in France and Italy. Simultaneously with the dance he practised the violin and became a famous violinist, member of the Royal String Orchestra and author of a number of compositions for stringed instruments. The recorded 6 sonatas were created in the late 1740s in Paris. They are magnificent works which give a right idea of the development of the performing art of the above-mentioned period and impress with their melodic inventiveness and virtuosity. Composed as a three- or four-movement sonata cycle, they combine features of the Baroque polyphonic way of thinking with exquisite interweaving of the voices and distinctly expressed harmonic texture. The specific steadiness and contrast, characteristic of the Classicism, have a particularly great emotional impact on the audience. The music radiates calmness and attracts not only with its melodiousness but with its elegance too. The performance of the violists Johannes Flieder (violist-soloist since 1980 of the Viennese symphonic orchestra) and the Bulgarian Dimitar Penkov (who in 1983 settled in Hannover and gives concerts throughout Europe) without doubt is an example for interpreting this kind of music. The two musicians play on splendid instruments made by great masters. Violists of highest level, Flieder and Penkov have penetrated deep into the style and content of the compositions. They achieve complete creative synchrony and lead their parts skillfully transforming them into garlands of melodies, which radiate a true esthetic pleasure.

The Bulgarian public already knows the violinist Sergiu Schwartz and a number of young violinists have received priceless advice during his master classes. Mr. Schwartz was born in Romania but now lives in Florida, USA. He is a pupil of the Bucharest School of Music, of Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv, of Guildhall School of Music in London and Juilliard School in New York, and is one of the most successful violinists, invited to perform with the most famous orchestras and at prestigious festivals. In this recording he plays on the ex Wilhelmi Lorenzo Storioni violin, made in Cremona in 1780. The idea to bring together some of the most loved both by the public and the performers compositions for violin from the 19th century is accomplished masterly by Sergiu Schwartz and Ruzhka Charakchieva who form a magnificent ensemble. Especially strong is their interpretation of the big sonatas by Brahms - No. 3 in D minor, and by Cesar Franck - in A major, which are basic for every well-known violinist. Dominating in them are the style and the mastered emotion, typical for these composers. At the same time there is a feeling of stability and getting deep to the heart of the message of these works. Sergiu Schwartz has a very beautiful, warm, expressive tone, whose vibrations are in harmony with the emotional content of the performed music. In each virtuoso piece, Schwartz and Charaktchieva emphasize the diversity of ideas and the strength of their personalities as musicians, perfectly synchronized in this programme.

World Premieres

Florent Schmitt (1870-1958) made an impressive carrier as a composer and music critic. The leading music dictionaries define him as "the new Berlioz", "an outstanding French composer", "genius innovator"… Having written numerous stage, orchestral, vocal, chamber and piano works, he never became associated with a specific compositional school or group. With his use of untraditional musical expressive means, bitonality, violent ostinatos, etc., he anticipated some future stylistic tendencies in the music of the 20th century. At the same time, his early piano works follow the traditions of 19th century piano music. The works on this CD were written during different periods of the composer's life and present various stylistic features and explorations.

"NANOUK L'ESQUIMAU" & "DRACULA" - Music Chrstian Leroy - Metarythmes de I'air

"NANOUK L'ESQUIMAU" & "DRACULA" - Music Chrstian Leroy - Metarythmes de I'air
ID: GD205
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Instrumental
Subcollection: Film Music

This release demonstrates a tendency toward including ever more spheres of the musical art in the company's catalogue. It presents music by Christian Leroy (b.1952), the Belgian composer and founder of the famous trio Metarythmes de l'air. Later it was transformed into a quintet in which besides Christian Leroy participate Philippe Saucez, Jose Bedeur, and Jeannot Gillis. The ensemble became famous for its international performances and its spirit for experimenting. Leroy is well known as author of the music for modern synthetic shows and is sought after by eminent poets, painters and directors. His music for the film Nanouk L'Esquimau (shot in 1921) through the skillful use of the quintet renders the atmosphere and the nature of the extreme North. Leroy has an amazing insight for sound, which he treats like expression of colours, and for combinations of sounds, radiating certain impressions (morning in the North, the sun shining in the eyes of the Eskimo children, etc.). Both with Nanouk l'Esquimau and Dracula (shot in 1931) Leroy revives the tradition to make the sound-track on live, to illustrate feelings and conditions through music and in this way sends us back to the age of the silent movie and the light music. In fact Dracula (directed by Tod Browning) is the first of a series of pictures on this topic. The fragments recorded on the CD give an idea about the mastership of Leroy and the performers in the genre of film music.

Metarythmes de l'air: Christian Leroy (piano, percussions, synthesizers), Philippe Sauces (clarinets), Jose Bedeur (double-bass), Jeannot Gillis (violin)
