Michael Krein - Saxaphone Quartet - Jack Brymer

Michael Krein - Saxaphone Quartet - Jack Brymer
ID: SC4003
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Instrumental
Subcollection: Saxophone

This CD consists of tracks from the BBC broadcasts (reproduced by kind permission) and transfers from the Canon Records LP.
Jack Brymer, England’s most eminent clarinettist, was also a great communicator. In the six decades following WW2 he built up a reputation as a raconteur, being able to call upon his lifetime of experiences at the top of a rather esoteric profession. During the 1970’s he found time to host a number of DJ style broadcasts exhibiting his deep mellifluous voice and a wealth of entertaining anecdotes. Having played Principal Clarinet in all the major London orchestras and under the baton of every conductor known to mankind, few people knew of Jack Brymer’s ability on the jazz platform and even fewer were aware of his fluency on the saxophone. One series of broadcasts was of him talking about the saxophone quartet. He demonstrated his love of light classical music by playing with the Michael Krein Saxophone Quartet, taking the role of its deceased founder and leader. These programmes were so successful that the quartet was asked to make a record. This compilation is dedicated to the memories of Michael Krein, Jack Brymer, Gordon Lewin, Norman Barker and Chester Smith - all masters of their art.

Music for Gainsborough - by his contemporaries

Music for Gainsborough - by his contemporaries
ID: SIGCD026
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

The paintings of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) constitute one of the most poignant and evocative icons of Georgian England; he painted supremely accomplished portraits of a wide social spectrum, and landscapes which capture the verdancy of England prior to the Stygian advance of the Industrial Revolution.

Gainsborough’s own creativity sought expression in music as much as in painting, which was unusual in an age when musical ability was mainly considered the preserve of the ladies.

For this musical tribute to Gainsborough, we have gathered together pieces by several of his friends; Abel, J.C. Bach, Giardini, Linley & Straube.

Subcollection: Choir

Now and again a choir director finds he has an exceptional voice at his disposal. Andrew Swait was only ten years old when this disc was made - his voice was the original inspiration for the disc - and it features his outstandingly colourful tone quality and musicianship. In choosing the repertoire, we kept in mind the integrity of the great English church music tradition. We decided to do what choirs - their men and boys - do best in this country; sing, enjoy and relish the music of that tradition. Solo arias are interspersed with full choir numbers, some featuring treble solos and duets. Works by Schubert and Rachmaninoff are coupled with works from our own English masters, Sir Hubert Parry and John Rutter. Morten Lauridsen’s setting of Ubi caritas, combines a lushness of texture with the age-old plainsong melody. We hope you will enjoy this collection from Tewkesbury.
