Symphony No.5 for organ and large orchestra "Reformation Hymn", Op. 36; Die Toteninsel, Symphonic poem; Heroische Ouverture, Op. 26; Abschieds-Klänge, Op. 28.

Once more we are about to make the acquaintance of a composer whose destiny was obscured by the giants if his time. Even today, the shadows of Brahms, Bruckner, later followed by those of Strauss and Wagner, determine what is first and second-class music. Little by Little, the German post-romantic period is rediscovered, thanks to enteprising record producres and idealistic conductors

Heinrich Schult was born in Beuthen in 1838. In 1862 he became pupil of Ignaz Moscheles and Carl Reinecke in Leibzig and thereby a fellow student of both Grieg and Svendsen. Schulz-Beuthen's manaaged to complete eight symphonies and left two unfinished. Other orchestral works include Symphonic poems, incidental music, melodrama, several overtures suites and miniatures. A lot of chamber music with Piano and other ensembles. Three operas, ten oratories and a requiem.

Friedrich von Flotow - Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2. Wilhelm von Oranien, Jubel Overture

Friedrich von Flotow - Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2. Wilhelm von Oranien, Jubel Overture
ID: CDS1077-2
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

An entirely new perspective on Friedrich von Flotow's compositions. This composer is best known on account of his opera Martha. Here we find newly discovered concertos, which must be considered as sensational. The first is brilliant and melodic, the second is probably influenced by Carl Maria von Weber's concertos. The Oranien suite is most charming, with Thomas Arne's Rule Britannia as one of the movements.

The last of the Huber symphonies. Symphony 4 more serene and innerlooking than the other symphonies. Saint-Saens seems to be a main source of inspiration. Symphony 8 again vivid and personal -but mainly idyllic as most of the Huber symphonies. One of the great storytellers among composers!

This is hardly believable. Here is an absolute first rate late romantic composer, forgotten because the Nazis made him forgotten! He kept loyal to his Jewish wife and to his political convictions and lost all his important positions in the Dresden musical life. He was much inspired by Richard Strauss, and his orchestral texture is full of a longing, radiant beauty. He has the same absolute command of the orchestra as Richard Strauss!

Berlin Radio SO conducted by Hans-Peter Frank (overture) and Gerhard Pflüger (symphony).

The symphonic poem Vettern is absolutely gorgeous! Undoubtedly here is a real gem, a Swedish Vltava, with the same kind of sweeping, blazing beauty. The symphony is classically brief and poignant, and we also hear the very idyllic, sweet-sounding orchestral suite I Vadstena Kloster.

A re-release of the world premičre recording of symphonic poems by Alfvén. The music gives a vivid illustration of dark, poetic dramas, in the typical Alfvén style. The very attractive painting on the cover is also by Alfvén, who as a young man considered becoming a painter

Elfrida Andrée was a Reinecke pupil, as is obvious from the symphony's big brass chorale melodies. The Fritiof Suite shows this even more! Originally conceived as an opera, the work was shortened into a symphonic suite written with surprising independence by the foremost Swedish lady organist. How is it possible that music of this quality could be forgotten?

Here is something very special. A grand, 57-minute, monumental romantic orchestral symphony, again written by an organ specialist. A truly great work with a slow, absolutely stunning third movement! This CD has already received high praise in the specialist press, resulting in excellent sales. Otto Olsson could have written many great orchestral works had he been allowed to develop his orchestral talents.

Rubenson: what a character! Starting off as a composer with fresh ideas, returning from Germany in the mid 1850s, he ended up as a strongly conservative professor at the Stockholm Musical Academy. What a sad fate, with many promises unfulfilled! Goodman regards the composer as a very interested figure in Swedish musical history - with many gifted ideas - linked to Schumann.

A tragedy, when the Finnish Romantic Ernst Mielck died at the young age of 22, dreams unfullfilled. He was an extremely gifted pupil of Max Bruch. His symphony is a dark beautiful drama, with a third movement filled with an inward quality. The concert piece is based on folk musik from Finland, with many charming melodies.
