His father Vasili Grigorovich Sviridov, telegraph operator, died in 1919 and his mother, Elizaveta Ivanovna, in 1937. The family moved to Kursk in 1924 where Georigi Vasilievich entered elementary school and also piano class of Kursk Music School. Before graduation in 1932, he began to compose and made some studies. After graduation, he moved to Leningrad (St. Petersburg), learned piano and composition at the Central Musical College (of Leningrad Tekhnika?) from 1932 to 1936, then went to Leningrad Conservatoire: Firstly in P. Ryazanov's class for a year or less, secondly in D. Shostakovich's class from 1937 to 1941. Not later than 1937 (1936?) he became a member of the Union of Soviet Composers. Survived the World War II through military service and evacuation, Sviridov returned to Leningrad in 1944 and was appointed musical director of Leningrad Academic Theater of Drama and Comedy. Since 1956 he had lived in Moscow and died there. Awarded so may prizes and received honors.

Lemeshev - "I'd like in one word" - Romances and Songs by Tschaikovsky 2CD
From the 100 Tchaikovsky's romances and songs, executed by S. Lemeshev, have only remained in recordings nearby 60. In the present album studio recordings, made in 1940-50th, are most fully presented. Lemeshev has recorded 13 of 16 children's songs of Tchaikovsky. The unique (incomplete) studio recording cycle of these songs has been made by the singer in 1955 (with B.M.Kozel - piano). Now we bring it to your attention, having added never published "Swallow" (1948) and «in the Winter evening» (the unique concert record). Especially interesting are unpublished pre-war recordings - «Don Juan’s serenade» and «Again, as before, alone» (1940)

His creative work was uncommon for 20th century music - he found his style remained inside the classical tradition without breaking it. No matter what he composed for - voice, choir or orchestra - his music went straight to the heart, evoking a sensitive listener’s keen response, be it a sophisticated music lover or a dilettante.
Sviridov’s music revives and continues the best aspects of the Russian music tradition. It is no mere chance that his best known compositions are linked with the name of Alexander Pushkin. These are the ones featured on this album.
The score to the motion picture The Blizzard, after Pushkin’s novel, was composed in 1964. It has outlived the film, becoming a self-sufficient and incredibly popular symphonic piece. Pushkin’s Garland for soloists, choir and instrumental ensemble became the composer’s offering for the poet’s 180th anniversary. This choir cycle opened a new page in Sviridov’s creative path, anticipating his late vocal opuses.
Sviridov's works are performed by the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, a recognized interpreter of the composer’s music, and the remarkable Moscow Chamber Choir under Vladimir Minin.
