S. Bach's The Art of Fugue….. For this performance, Neville Marriner and Andrew Davis prepared an edition for 2 violins, viola, cello, violone, oboe, cor anglais, bassoon, organ, and 2 harpsichords…. This performance eschews any scholarly attempt to "complete" Bach's magnum opus for him, allowing the final fugue to peter out just before the third subject, based on the name BACH (B-flat, A. C, B-natural in German notation), is combined with the other two. As often as I've heard it, this moment of sudden silence is so striking it's eerie in its emotional impact!”

“This Marriner/Academy of St Martin in the Fields performance [of the Art of Fuge] may well be the version to suit the greatest number of listeners.”
---James Reel, Fanfare
“ The 4.0 multichannel is conservatively executed with a nicely dimensional presentation of the chamber ensemble. Instrumental tonalities are richly and warmly characterized, belying the recording’s analog origin - a virtue equally evident with the stereo DSD program.”
---Andrew Quint, the Absolute Sound
“… these are superb surround recordings that don’t sound dated in any way.”

“Marriner's Art of the Fugue, recorded Brent Town Hall, London in July 1974, is , as expected from the participants, a splendid performance, superbly recorded. It also is one of the longest SACDs: 80:27.”
