Emma Abbate & Julian Perkins (piano duet)
Pianists Julian Perkins and Emma Abbate have come together to record the first of two volumes of the complete piano duets of Mozart on original fortepianos.

Some of Mozart’s lesser-known works, his piano duets span most of his active life, with the earliest written at the age of nine. Often delightful and lyrical as well as humorous and exciting, these works are given an authentic air on period instruments. Included on this first volume are duets in D major K381, C major K521 and B-flat major, K358. Also included is a duet by Johann Christian Bach, with whom the infant Mozart is alleged to have played keyboard duets whilst sitting on the older composer's lap.

Recorded live in the Tubin Hall, Tartu on Oct 19th, 2017 Instrument: Steinway & Sons D-274 tuned by Andres Leesik

The Soul of Fire will be my first album that will be released in this year. Fire is the main theme for several reasons. To begin with, this album contains three pieces, where fire takes on different forms. In Manuel de Falla′s piano suite El amor brujo after the ballett of the same name, fire is spellbounding and sacred. In La Vega by Isaac Albéniz, fire is as if under the ashes, symbolizing also the fiery soul of a gypsy. In the transcription of Igor Stravinsky′s ballet L’oiseau de feu the fabulous Firebird has taken the fiery image. Secondly, since I was a child, I have been described as a spark of fire. Finally, I am a Sagittarius − a sign which is a part of the Fire Trigon.
I wish that my first album would be “alive” and that is why I prefer live recordings to the ones that are made in the studio. I am happy and thankful that I have the opportunity to record this album at the Tubin Hall in Tartu, because this hall is at the moment the most suited place for it in Estonia − a wonderful auditorium, great acoustics and a good Steinway piano! I am also glad that I can collaborate with the highly esteemed sound director Tanel Klesment and piano tuner Andres Leesik during this project. My special thanks belong to Estonian Record Productions, who help to make the dream of the album a reality.

Professors of the Moscow Conservatoire

Mikhail Voskresensky is one of Russia's leading pianists. He is the winner of four international piano competitions (Schumann in Berlin, in Rio de Janeiro, George Enescu in Bucharest, and Van Cliburn in Fort Worth, Texas). In 1966 he was honoured with the Merited Artist of Russia award and in 1989, the People's Artist of Russia. Mikhail Voskresensky has extensive concert experience. He is the only pianist in Russia to perform all of Chopin's piano compositions during one concert season (in 1982-83, in nine recitals in the Maly Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire) Mikhail Voskresensky graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire where he studied under Ilia Klyachko, Boris Zemliansky, Yakob Milstein, Lev Oborin (piano) and Leonid Roizman (organ). As student of the famous Lev Oborin, the winner of the First Chopin's Competition in 1927, Voskresensky adopted his teacher's refined romanticism, and perfect taste in harmony with the piano's splendid sound. The images evoked by his playing suggest contrasting musical colours, never out of harmony, with a charming legato inducing the instrument to sing. "His playing fascinates audiences with its artistry, cordiality and ingeniousness. Mikhail Voskresensky is a very talented and intelligent musician", Oborin wrote about his pupil. Voskresensky's repertoire includes Beethoven's 32 sonatas, all the works of Chopin, and 54 piano concertos. He has performed with orchestras under the direction of more than 150 conductors, among them, John Pritchard, Franz Konwitschny, Kurt Masur, Eugeny Svetlanov, Stanislav Skrowachewsky, and Kirill Kondrashin. His 40 CD's include recent recordings of all sonatas and studies by Scriabin, "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Moussorgsky, and the Second Sonata by Shostakovich. Pupils of this well-known Professor of the Moscow Conservatoire have won 98 prizes in international competitions, among them 43 gold medals. Mikhail Voskresensky regularly gives master classes in Russia, France, Germany, Spain, Holland, the USA, Australia, Japan and other countries. He has participated as juror for international competitions in London, Leeds, Sydney, Tel Aviv, as well as for the Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Competitions in Moscow. He continues to be Chairman of the Jury for the Scriabin International Competition in Moscow. Mikhail Voskresensky is President of the Scriabin International Society, the Patron of EPTA-RUSSIA (European Piano Teachers Association), and Guest Professor in the Toho Gakuen School in Tokyo. Although Mr. Voskresensky devotes many of his efforts to teaching and giving master classes in various countries, he undoubtedly considers his primary purpose to be performing. Voskresensky is an extraordinary and unique musician: when hearing his playing one can feel his sincere and subtle soul - a rare thing, indeed, in our rational times.
