Music for the Derek Deane Production for English National Ballet
In 1995, English National Ballet commissioned a score for a full length ballet, based on Lewis Carroll’s immortal masterpiece, Alice in Wonderland. The one stipulation and challenge was for a score to be based on the music of Tchaikovsky. Carl Davis accepted the challenge and a smash hit was born!
The centre of the score is derived from Tchaikovsky’s Album for the Young. Davis also drew on Tchaikovsky’s Theatre Music, Tone Poems and Operas, as well as the beautiful waltz from the Fifth Symphony for The Garden of Living Flowers. This highly successful production was revived many times, including performances at the Company’s London Coliseum seasons. Pittsburgh Ballet in the U.S. has already staged the ballet in April, 2008 and plan to continue performing it. ENB was invited to take the ballet to Hong Kong in March, 2009 and plans a further U.K. tour in 2010.
Alice in Wonderland marks the launch of the Carl Davis Collection. There are four projects planned for release in 2009: Alice in Wonderland; the prize-winning soundtrack to Hannah Davis and David Conolly’s feature film The Understudy; music for the BBC TV series Cranford and the ballet Cyrano commissioned from Carl Davis by The Birmingham Royal Ballet, choreographed by David Bintley and premiered in 2007. This ballet will go on a national tour including Sadler’s Wells in Autumn 2009.
The Carl Davis Collection has far-reaching plans to produce all major works on both CD and DVD of the compositions of Carl Davis. The Repertoire for the following two years is already in preparation.

Music for Abel Gance's classic silent film Napoleon: Eagle of Destiny
Carl Davis’ score for the epic 1921 silent movie Napoleon has come to be recognised as a milestone in modern day scoring for silent films. The film when shown is across three screens and is a monumental epic of over five hours in duration when screened in its entirety, and new fragments are still being discovered. Carl Davis was commissioned to write the score at over five hours it was to be the longest in cinema history. The release here is an abridged version. Kevin Brownlow responsible for restoring and bringing a revival of the film said it was the finest score he had ever heard for a film, it not only fitted precisely the action and mood of every sequence, it enhanced the emotional quality of the film. ‘Exalting’, is the only word to describe the effect. The critics were equally enthusiastic. ‘This is the cinematic wonder of the age’ said the Times, ‘and Carl Davis’ score provides a perfect accompaniment- subtle but grandiloquent.’
The score is a mixture of existing music arrangements of traditional material and new composition. During his research into the Hollywood series Carl Davis discovered that this method was the way the composers for silent film worked. This score is his tribute to them.

1. THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN
Carl Davis’s score for The French Lieutenant’s Woman won both BAFTA and Novello Awards in 1981. The film made international stars of Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons, supported by the soaring romanticism of the music. This new suite runs the full gamut of emotions : despair to its ecstatic conclusion.
2. HOTEL DU LAC
Anita Brookner’s 1983 Booker Prize winning award was the inspiration for this 1986 BBC dramatization starring Anna Massey and Denholm Elliott. This new ‘Nocturne’ takes the raw materials of Carl Davis’s original score and shapes them into a touching and moody distillation of the original novel. Features Amy Dickson (alto saxophone).
3. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Voted No. 1 in the Radio Time’s ‘People’s Favourite Competition’, this 1995 series changed the face of dramatizations of classic novels. Carl Davis’s witty and expressive score matched the brilliance of Jane Austen’s scintillating text. His new suite in three movements introduces the family, their critics, and the fabulous love story of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy. Melvyn Tan who played the forte piano on the original soundtrack repeats his stunning performance on a full scale Steinway.
4. CRANFORD
This delightful series, filmed in 2007 and 2009 starring Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins, is the source for this new suite of selections from Carl Davis’s panoramic score based on Mrs Gaskell’s charming novel. From the high life of Hanbury Castle to the gossiping ladies of Cranford, all held together by Carl Davis’s spellbinding music.

Featuring Barbara Dickson, Tommy Williams & Lucy Parham

Carl's classic album from the 1980s. The album originally entitled 'Liverpool Pops at Home' grew out of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic's desire to put on a concert called Sounds of the City, a concert to show the richness of the musical legacy from the great musicians and composers of Liverpool. The evening hit all the right buttons and a recording followed.

Also featured is the much sought after Champions Suite, one of the most frequently requested of Carl’s works, from the acclaimed film Champions which charted top jockey Bob Champion’s fight with cancer.

The internationally famous composer and conductor, Carl Davis, C.B.E. (Hon.) has written some of the most memorable and moving scores for films and documentary series about World War II. This CD re-works five of these into Concert Suites. The World at War, the ground-breaking Emmy Award winning twenty-six part series introduced by Carl Davis’s stirring theme is hailed as definitive. Digitally re-mastered on Blue-ray, the series will be actively advertised and promoted over the coming months.
Starring John Thaw and the fastest selling DVD ever, Goodnight Mr Tom is the touching story of a disturbed East End evacuee finding a new home in the idyllic English countryside. The music reflects the joys of country life, as well as the tragic events of the Blitz.
Award-winning Echoes That Remain, produced by the Simon Wiesenthal Foundation, celebrates the culture of the Shetetl, the small Jewish settlements of Eastern Europe. Carl Davis’s score incorporates traditional Yiddish songs, as well as underlining the dark days of the destruction at the hands of the Nazis.
Anne Frank Remembered is an Academy Award winning film that gave fascinating insights into her life both before and after her years in the famous attic. Carl Davis’s score expresses the poetic spirit and courage of a budding writer, as well as the horrendous events closing in on her.
The Snow Goose - the most substantial work on the CD is based on Paul Gallico’s romantic novel, was beautifully translated to film, starring Jenny Agutter (winning her an Emmy) and Richard Harris. This new ‘Rhapsody’ combines all the major themes, closing with the music for the heroic rescue from Dunkirk.

Rare Goossens - Oboe Concertos

Recorded between 1925 and 1947

The CD booklet contains an essay (in English, French and German) about Goossens and his art by Melvin Harris which has recieved much praise - "Melvin Harris' excellently supportive booklet note" (Classical Music Web); "Melvin Harris, author of the excellent insert note" (Gramophone). There are photographs from Goossens' early and middle life, including some not seen before.

Of Léon Goossens it was once said: "There is perhaps only one other musician who can so etherialise his instrument. One thinks of Casals and his cello."

But it was not always so. In his early days Léon Goossens was dissatisfied with the models he was expected to emulate. His first teacher was Charles Reynolds, the renowned lead oboist of the Hallé Orchestra. Great though he was at teaching breath control and practice passages, his tone and phrasing held no magic for his young pupil. Etherealisation was absent from a tone that was broad, without vibrato and, as Léon put it, "bullish". Indeed, to mute his instrument, Reynolds used to hang a robust pocket handkerchief over his music stand and project into it!

Later studies at London's Royal College of Music brought no real inspiration, for the oboe professor there was William Malsch, a kindly man, but an unlovely player. He was dropped from the Queen's Hall Orchestra since his tone set Sir Henry Wood's teeth on edge. An American critic agreed, when he wrote "His tone bites like sulphuric acid".

The great breakthrough came when Léon heard the Belgian oboist Henri De Busscher play at the Queen's Hall. De Busscher's playing was delicate and expressive, with a marvellous singing quality about it. His long, sensitive phrases were a marvel. His cameo-like tone was endowed with a warm vibrato. This was the inspiration that Léon had yearned for. Night after night he listened out for De Busscher's solos, then went back to his room to emulate and aim for the same subtle and singing control over his oboe. He was an eager and gifted pupil, so much so that when De Busscher left for New York, Henry Wood chose the 16-year-old Goossens to take his place. copyright Melvin Harris, 2002

Jonathan Harvey won a Gramophone Award in 2008 for his NMC CD Body Mandala. The works, commissioned by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, explore his fascination with Eastern philosophies.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra celebrates the life and work of Jonathan Harvey in two days of concerts, films and talks at the Barbican, London. Total Immersion runs from the 28-29 January 2012.

Harvey’s Bhakti was the first release on NMC in 1989.

Jonathan was invited by Pierre Boulez to work at IRCAM in the early 1980s.

Bird Concerto - Harvey's hommage to Messiaen - is a celebration of the kind of technical advances in electroacoustics which the creator of Oiseaux exotiques and the Catalogue d’oiseaux was never able to explore. Harvey started writing the piece when he was in California and says that ‘indigo bunting, orchard oriole, golden crowned sparrow ... are some of the forty colourful Californian birds whose songs and cries sparked the ignition of this work’. The bird sounds have been innovatively transformed to create a mesmeric dialogue between nature and art. Harvey sets the piano soloist (the work was commissioned by pianist Joanna MacGregor) the challenge of combining piano playing and triggering a sampler/ synthesizer so that the live electronics can be realised in real-time performance. Other works on this disc are Other Presences, for trumpet and multi-loop effects, and two versions of the canonic Ricercare una melodia (1984) originally written for trumpet and quadraphonic tape-delay system, but here performed on oboe and cello, with live electronics from Sound Intermedia.
